Be Your Own Idol is a performance skills
course for teens, focusing on confidence-building, constructive feedback,
audition preparation and practical advice from working musicians.
Is your playing stuck in first gear? Are
you ready to learn some serious soloing techniques & take your playing into
overdrive?
Guitarist & music educator
Rob MacSpurren will show you the
steps to mastering hammer-ons, pull-offs, tapping, scales, alternate and
sweep picking in a way that's easy to understand and apply. Unlock the
secrets of players such as Yngwie Malmsteen, Eddie Van Halen, Zakk Wylde and
Dimebag Darrell, and jump into the fast lane!
Time: 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Need for Speed Question & Answer: I have some guitar experience playing chords, and basic strumming. I would like a jump start on moving to the next level. Would this course be appropriate for me? You have a good knowledge base. I am, in fact, targeting players such as yourself that are interested in moving beyond strumming chords and playing basic melodies and want to develop your soloing speed. I will be taking the material step by step, so that even if you have never played a guitar solo, I'm sure you will find the material easy to apply. You indicate to bring a cable...will this course be electric oriented? I have both an electric and accoustic. Which one would you prefer us to bring? You should use whichever instrument is most comfortable. I would recommend that you bring your electric because electrics tend to be easier to play and amplification tends to pull the sound out of your guitar with little effort. What type of music will you be leaning towards?
The focus of the course
will revolve around hard rock lead guitar players and the specialized
techniques that they employ. However, the techniques that I will be
teaching can be applied to any style that requires the execution of quick,
intricate melodies. The techniques covered in the course would be right
at home in bluegrass music, for instance.
I am gearing the course towards
high-speed lead guitar playing. I will be showing the students how to
apply them in a melodic way, but only after the basic techniques have been
covered. Previous courses offered in 2010 April 2010 Do you enjoy singing but lack confidence? Do you want to be able to sing or play and sing your songs around friends or at open mics with confidence? If you also play guitar and sing but have trouble putting the two together we will work on that too. Open to Singers and Singer/guitarists, but you do not have to play guitar to take this course, the instructor will play for you!
This course is designed for the adult beginner
who would like to gain confidence and feel comfortable singing, get your
songs polished up, finished and ready for this campfire season. click here to view a sample song list Maximum class: size eight students, April 1st to June 3rd

The term "jazz standard" refers to a tune of
established popularity that has withstood the test of time. Each week we'll
learn a different song. We'll examine the original context of the tune, look
in-depth at the lyric, and listen to a few recordings of each. We'll learn
the verse if one exists; and we'll consider musical aspects like the form,
tempo, mood, phrasing, style/groove, and improv approaches. We'll sing the
standard, and each week you'll leave with a lead sheet with chords that
sound good and the lyrics, as well as identifying what key suits your voice
best for the song. Over the course of the class, we'll learn about keys,
transposition, lead sheets, and the art of the set list - and you'll finish
with almost a set's worth of material. Previous Courses offered in 2008/2009 2009 Previous Courses
